FAQsFrequently asked questions
The innerspring mattress gets its name from the metal support coil (also called springs) that form the core of the bed. This traditional mattress type is known for its classic springy, bouncy feel. A basic innerspring mattress will last you about 7-8 years. Saatva innersprings can last upwards of 10 years with normal use.
The main difference between an innerspring mattress and a foam mattress comes down to the materials. An innerspring has a core support system made of coiled metal springs, while a foam mattress is made up of layers of polyurethane or viscoelastic (memory) foams. Memory foam mattresses generally offer a body-hugging feel. Innerspring mattresses generally have a bouncy, springy feel.
While both mattress types have a lot of inherent differences, the choice between the two really comes down to individual preferences. That's why a great in-home trial period (like our 365-day home trial) is so crucial to making the most confident choice in your next mattress.

A foundation can be covered in fabric or have an exposed wood frame, with a solid top or one made of wood slats. The main purpose of a mattress foundation is to raise your sleeping surface to a comfortable height and give your mattress optimal support.
In the past, box springs used to be made of wood and filled with metal coils to add a springy flexibility and cushioning to the thin, stiff mattresses of those days. Nowadays, what some people still call "box springs" are more accurately called mattress foundations or bed foundations. They don't contain metal springs anymore, but serve the same purpose of making your bed setup more comfortable and supportive.
Saatva offers two foundation heights, 4.75" and 8.75." There is no difference in quality or performance between the two heights; the choice is a matter of personal preference and the overall height of the bed setup you want. One consideration is whether you plan to use your existing bed skirt. The "drop" on a standard bed skirt is 14" to 15," which works with the 8.75" foundation and a standard 7" bed frame.
A mattress pad, sometimes called a mattress cover, is a thin piece of quilted material that fits over the surface of your mattress, much like a fitted sheet. It offers an extra layer of light cushioning and much-needed protection against stains and general wear and tear.
Sateen cotton is woven with long-staple cotton yarn using a one-yarn-over, three-yarn-under weave structure. This technique creates a silky-soft feel known for its luster and drape.
Our 300 thread count sateen sheets were designed to balance softness and breathability.
Absolutely! Natural fibers are typically more breathable than synthetic fibers like polyester.
The 100% natural long staple cotton we use for our sheets are 200 thread count for the percale and 300 thread count for the sateen, making it the perfect balance of soft and breathable.
This type of innerspring mattress features individually wrapped metal spring coils.
The two main advantages to individually wrapped coils are: 1) they conform and respond to your curves better than open coils and 2) they limit motion transfer because the coils move independently.
According to the National Sleep Foundation, the sweet spot for thread count in cotton sheets is between 200 and 400. If you tend to sleep hot, a higher thread count may not be a great choice as it tends to trap body heat. Sticking to that sweet spot for thread count is a good way to ensure your cotton sheets won't feel too warm.
Microfiber sheets are made out of polyester fabric, giving them a soft, stretchy feel. They're more affordable than natural cotton sheets but the drawback is that they're not as breathable as cotton or other natural fibers. They're also not as environmentally friendly to produce because they're made from synthetic fibers.
Our Saatva Latex Pillow has a washable organic cotton outer cover and microdenier fiber pillow. Simply unzip the cover, remove the core of shredded natural latex, and machine wash the cover and pillow. Please DO NOT wash the shredded latex core. We recommend washing your pillow twice a year and replacing after 3 years or so.
All sleep positions will enjoy optimal support for the head and neck with the Saatva Latex Pillow. The responsive shredded latex foam core and down-like fiber fill offer a great balance of plush comfort and optimal support.
It’s also available in two loft heights to accommodate every type of sleeper.
Yes! All of our pillows use hypoallergenic materials.
Our memory foam and natural latex foam pillows help inhibit the growth of dust mites and other contaminants, making them a great choice if you suffer from indoor allergies. Our down alternative pillows use two types of hypoallergenic down alternative fibers which are better for allergy sufferers than traditional down fill.
All of our pillows are encased in covers made with naturally moisture-wicking organic cotton.
The natural latex we use in some of our mattresses, latex pillows, and latex mattress topper, goes through a thorough washing process to remove all allergy-causing proteins.
Additionally, the latex layer never actually comes into contact with the skin, making it safe even for those with latex allergies.
Yes. Natural latex pillows are free of harmful chemicals and VOCs (volatile organic compounds), so they won't off-gas (emit an unpleasant chemical odor) in your home. Natural latex is also antimicrobial and resistant to mildew, dust mites, and other indoor allergens.
Natural latex is superbly breathable to keep you cooler and more comfortable through the night.
We recommend replacing your latex pillows after about 3 years of regular use.
Saatva Latex Pillows are not adjustable but they do come in two different loft height options to suit all sleep positions and preferences.
This type of pillow is filled with memory foam (also known as viscoelastic foam), a type of high-density polyurethane that softens in response to body heat and pressure. This allows the pillow to contour to your head and neck and spring back into shape when it cools down.
Our uniquely constructed memory foam pillow is designed to contour to the head and neck for optimal comfort and support in all sleep positions, and its thicker height is particularly great for side sleepers.
Not all memory foams are created equally. We only use CertiPUR-US® certified memory foams to ensure that your mattresses and pillows are free of harmful chemicals, are low in VOCs (volatile organic compounds), and won't off-gas (emit an unpleasant chemical odor) in your home.
Yes! Because memory foam pillows offer such excellent head and neck support, they're a great choice for a variety of sleep positions
A high-quality memory foam pillow should last you three years or more with normal use.
Memory foams respond to body heat and pressure by softening to contour to your body and spring back into shape as the foams cool down. However, just like any cushioning that bears your body weight, it's normal to expect some body impressions after you lie on your memory foam pillow night after night, but it shouldn't flatten out with normal use.
It's a good idea to replace your memory foam pillows every three years or so to make sure your pillow is always supportive and hygienic.
No. In fact, because of its ability to mold to your body, it offers excellent pain and pressure relief for your neck and shoulders.
Latex pillows have a fill and/or core made up of latex rather than memory foam. Natural latex, like the kind we use in our Saatva Latex Pillow, is more generally more durable and breathable than memory foam.
